Best Christmas Markets in Europe: 2026 Guide with Weather
The best Christmas markets in Europe compared: weather, crowds, and where to stay. Strasbourg, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, Amsterdam.
The best Christmas markets in Europe are a small, well-known set: Strasbourg, Prague, Vienna, Budapest, and increasingly Amsterdam. Every winter, the same conversation happens in group chats across Europe — which one this year?
The stalls, mulled wine, and roasted almonds are broadly similar everywhere. What actually varies is the weather, the crowds, and the character of each city in December. We pulled ten years of December weather data for each city below, and paired it with a straightforward verdict.
Christmas Markets Strasbourg — the classical choice
Strasbourg's Christkindelsmärik dates back to 1570 and is generally considered the most atmospheric market in Europe. Half-timbered houses, cathedral bells, a genuine sense that this is not a theme park. December weather in Strasbourg: max 6°C, min 1°C, and around 55mm rain across the month. Bring a proper coat and thermal socks.
Best for: First-timers, families, anyone who wants the “definitive” European Christmas market. Book accommodation six months out.
Christmas Fair Prague — the postcard
Prague's Old Town Square hosts a giant tree, dozens of stalls, and (importantly) surprisingly cheap food and drink compared with Western Europe. Prague in December averages 3°C by day and -2°C at night. Snow is more likely than in Strasbourg. Photographers love it.
Best for: Value, photography, first trip to Central Europe.
Vienna Christmas Markets — the refined choice
Vienna does its Weihnachtsmarkt with a certain seriousness — multiple markets across the city, from the sprawling Rathausplatz to smaller neighbourhood editions. Weather is similar to Prague: cold but bearable, less rain than Amsterdam. Combine a market visit with a night at the opera.
Budapest Christmas Fair — the underrated one
Budapest's Vörösmarty Square market is smaller than Prague's, but the food is arguably better — chimney cakes, hot wine, lángos with cheese. The Széchenyi thermal baths become genuinely delightful when it's -1°C outside. Budapest is the value pick.
Amsterdam Christmas Fair — for something different
Amsterdam does not do the huge central Christmas market of Strasbourg or Prague. Instead, it does the Amsterdam Light Festival, transforming the canals into an outdoor gallery. December is wet in Amsterdam — 75mm of rain, 15 rainy days on average. Bring proper waterproofs.
Which is the prettiest Christmas market in Europe?
For traditional beauty: Strasbourg. For dramatic scale: Prague. For food: Budapest. For sophisticated culture: Vienna. For something different: Amsterdam. All five link below with the full December weather guide and where to stay.
When do Christmas markets open?
- Most open around 25 November and close on 24 December (Christmas Eve).
- A few — Vienna, Prague — extend into early January.
- The best weeks are early to mid-December: markets are fully open, but the pre-Christmas crowds haven't peaked.
Packing for European Christmas markets in December
- A properly warm coat — not a fashion piece
- Thermal base layer and wool socks
- Waterproof boots with grip (cobblestones + wet stone + hot wine = falls)
- A compact umbrella (essential in Amsterdam, useful everywhere)
- Fingerless gloves for holding gluhwein cups
